AI Surveillance Cameras

AI cameras run analytics on the device itself, classifying people and vehicles and flagging events such as line crossings before footage reaches your recorder. Choose by field of view, lighting and the analytics you need.

Buying advice

Set a requirement for every camera view

Before picking models, write down what each view must achieve, such as detecting a person at a fence line or identifying a face at a door, along with the lighting at that spot after dark. IEC 62676-4:2025, the IEC application guidelines for video surveillance systems, sets out how to plan, install, commission and maintain a system, and gives you a structure for that brief. With dozens of models here from Axis, Hanwha Vision, Avigilon, Bosch, Pelco and others, a view-by-view brief keeps the comparison manageable. On the October 2026 review, you could see listed prices as low as about $129 for the Reolink CX810 ColorX and as high as about $4,801 for the Hanwha Wisenet PNM-C34404RQPZ, and 15 more needed a quote.

Check supply-chain restrictions before shortlisting

Some buyers cannot use certain brands at all. In the United States, FAR 52.204-25 restricts federal contractors from providing or using video surveillance equipment made by Hikvision, Dahua or Hytera, including their subsidiaries and affiliates, so the Hikvision DeepinView and Dahua models on this page would normally be excluded from that work. Other governments, regulators and large companies keep their own restricted-supplier lists, so check with your procurement team before you shortlist. For every brand, ask how long the camera will receive firmware security updates and how the maker tells customers about vulnerabilities.

Treat on-camera analytics as personal data processing

Object classification, number-plate reading and face matching all process personal data, and regulators look at them closely. In the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office guidance on video surveillance covers ANPR and facial recognition, and expects a data protection impact assessment for higher-risk systems. In the EU, Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, the AI Act, places strict limits on remote biometric identification. If a camera or its software offers face recognition, ask which algorithm it uses and whether that algorithm has been tested in NIST's Face Recognition Technology Evaluation. Switch off analytics you do not need, and set retention periods before the cameras go live.

What to look for

  • Form factor for each position: bullet, dome, PTZ, fisheye or thermal
  • Which analytics run on the camera, and which need a server or licence
  • Compatibility with your VMS, and any procurement rules your organisation follows

Common questions

What does AI-powered mean on a camera?

The camera runs detection models on board, typically classifying people and vehicles so rules and searches work on objects rather than raw motion. Features vary by maker and licence.

Will these cameras work with my existing system?

Many support the ONVIF standard and integrate with common video management systems, though analytics data may need a specific platform. Check compatibility before you order.
